Procedure
First, you need to make the dot patterns that will be used in your work of art.
- Open a new file in Photoshop: 1 inch x 1 inch, 72 ppi.
- From the top menu, select view >> show >> grid. Make sure it has a check mark next to it.
- Select a hard round brush, size 10. Select the color red.
- Place a dot on every other grid intersection so that your file looks like this:
- Save this image as a JPG (red_dots.jpg)
- Select edit >> define pattern.
- Name the pattern "red dots" and click OK.
Now you need to design your final image.
- Find a picture of a recognizable product. Some examples:
- A popular item from a fast food restaurant or store (Big Mac, slurpie, etc.)
- An electronic device (cell phone, mp3 player, laptop, gaming system)
- Bottled drinks (Coke, Gatorade, etc)
- A food or candy product (Doritos, skittles, etc.)
- Brand name shoes
2. Open this picture in Photoshop. Copy and paste it into a new 8 x 10 inch or 10 x 8 inch, 300 ppi file.
3. Select a hard, round bush, size 10. Create a new layer.
4. On your new layer, outline your object.
4. On your new layer, outline your object.
5. Hide your original picture so that only your outline is visible. Add your own unique design to your composition.
6. Add an action word to your image using the Text tool.
To get the outline, select each letter of your word with the magic wand while holding down shift.
Right click on FX (tool bar below layers) and select “Stroke."
In the window that pops up, select black for the color and 10px for the width.

7. Use the magic wand and fill tool to add color to your letters. Remember to only use primary colors!
8. Hide the layer with your original image. Hide any other layers you do not want visible.
9. Double check that all of your background lines meet up with your object. Zoom in so you can see.
10. Go to Layer >>> Merge Visible. This will merge all of your layers so you can add color to the individual sections. If you do not hide unwanted layers (ie. Your original object), these layers will be merged and cannot be undone.
11. Use the magic wand and fill tool to add color. Use a combination of solid color and dots. To use your dot patterns, select the fill tool and change the fill from foreground to pattern. Remember to only use primary colors!
